Campaign for President of the United States

Utah Republican Convention tomorrow

This email has been sent out to Utah supporters, but in case you are in Utah and missed it, here it is (just update the two days away to one day away):

Ron Paul supporters are anxiously preparing for the Utah State Republican Convention in Orem, Utah, now just two days away. Some will attend the convention as state delegates, some are running for National Delegate or National Alternate, and some will attend the convention to distribute flyers, etc. Lowell Nelson and others are coordinating the efforts of a number of Ron Paul people, and they need your help!

If you are a state delegate, and if you have not heard from Lowell, please send him an email message TODAY (at lowell@netdocuments.com ). He has a list of the Ron Paul candidates for National Delegate and National Alternate. We need everyone to vote for these candidates, and only these candidates, so our contingent at the national convention can be as strong as possible.

If you are not a state delegate, but can attend the convention to help, please let him know ASAP. We need people to distribute convention literature to delegates as they arrive at the convention at 7AM. Some delegates will have House or Senate caucuses to attend, so they won’t be free to distribute flyers. Your volunteering to help will make a positive difference.

If you cannot go to the convention, but can telephone state delegates tonight and Friday night (to identify like-minded, liberty-loving individuals), please email Lowell right now! He can give you a list of state delegates to call.

One of the most important things we can do at the convention is defeat the proposal to change the rules to unbind the Utah delegation from the winner of the UT presidential primary. The rule as it stands now, is that the UT delegation is bound to the winner of the UT primary. As you know, Mitt Romney won the UT primary and has earned and deserves the 36 votes on the first ballot at the national convention. The rules for the primary were in place and the voters knew what they were when they cast their vote and it is our responsibility to honor those rules. Changing the rule will require a 2/3 (super) majority.

And if the rule is changed, there will also be considered a resolution to bind the entire Utah delegation to John McCain on the first ballot of the national convention. Passing this resolution will require a simple majority. If the party rule is not changed, then this resolution would not even be considered. But if the party rule is changed, we must do everything we can to defeat this resolution.

Much will be happening today and tomorrow. We need your help to move forward the cause of Liberty. Get in touch with Lowell Nelson, and be a part of a team whose objective is to defeat the party rule change, and to get a bunch of Ron Paul supporters elected to represent Utah and Utah’s values of limited government, economic freedom and personal responsibility at the national convention.

Yes, this will deny votes to Mc during the first round at National. Good strategy.

Get those Ron Paul delegates seated for National to vote after the first round at National.

It takes a 2/3rd majority (66%) to unbind the delegates, but only a majority (51%) to rebind them to another person?

That seems really weird to me. You would think it would take a 2/3rd majority to rebind them.

If there are 51% Ron Paul people there it could turn out spledidly.

Matt; I want to to thank you for this extremely important post. We should have been doing this type of coordination/communication from the very beginning of the campaign one year ago!!!! IMO, IF we had, we could be a very serious force in American politics. I wonder why you were NOT given more credence by Moore and Snyder?????

If Mormons there in Utah are “true to their faith” as to the Constitution being an God inspired document, we should see a major victory by Ron Paul at the Utah GOP convention. I hope they will put the Constitution and Ron Paul ahead of the pressure for “party unity behind McCain” From past events/experience, I expect that party unity will prevail. I HOPE I’M BADLY WRONG!!! Utah is among the most GOP states in the union along with Idaho. A Ron Paul trunaround there and in Idaho should receive national MSM coverage showing that McCain is NOT really wanted by the GOP new blood.

    Liberty,

Thanks, but I’ll take the blame for not posting more on the conventions. I’ve wondered for the past couple of months if it would be best to keep the correspondence solely between state coordinators and supporters in those states to keep things more low-key (there are a few advantages to that), but I’ve recently decided that it is great direction and better to make it public for people to see and to help them get a better sense of what to do in their primaries as well. Plus, some supporters in those states might not get those emails and might be seeing info here for the first time.

I hope that they turn out too! This could be very good for us. Thanks!

    Matt

    Matt Howes,

Why isn’t this Utah report on DailyPaul also? I know people who go to that website who don’t come to this one.

Matt can’t post at DailyPaul. That would be “coordination” and require DailyPaul to report their “contributions” to the campaign.

    But we can copy them.

    Chewbacca,

In answer to your question, the unbinding of the delegates requires a change to the party by-laws, which requires a 2/3 majority. The binding of the delegates would simply be a resolution, thus the simple majority. At least that’s how I understand it.

We’ll be fighting as hard as possible to defeat this and we’re working on getting our slate out to like-minded people. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

I think national is doing an excellent job organizing and facilitating via emails, voice messages and now on the Blog. When it came time for the caucus in my area I was notified several times where to go what to do etc…. Good luck Utah!

I’m wondering how fair it would be to rebind delegates to someone who didn’t even get 10% of the popular vote. Of course, this being the GOP it’s not supposed to be fair. I wonder what kind of tricks they’ll pull to keep our delegates out this time.

    To Josh:

The primaries are simply “popularity contests” with no substance. Frankly, I would like to go back to NOT having primaries but have serious conventions where candidates at all levels are chosen by those who really care about the party prinicpals.

Even if Romney is there supporting McCain, voters in primaries voted for Romney and it’s to him the delegates should support–at least in the first round of of voting. Just because Romney changed his mind and decided to support McCain doesn’t mean the people who voted for him also did.

    Off Topic

I am thinking that if Ron Paul doesn’t get the nomination that is not all bad. By staying in the GOP race we are given the best platform possible to get the freedom message out to the voters. Now that Chuck Baldwin is a candidate…lets say he chooses the Judge or Jessie as VP that would leave Dr Paul in Congress doing what he does best. We would then have 3 Patriotic men in DC fighting for the Constitution. That makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over.

I agree with you but would like to add that many like myself who have voted Republican for over 20 years don’t want McCain as the nominee either. That is one point the GOP would rather not admit. Go Ron Paul.

Utah Delegates and attendees to the Convention.

Please make sure that you have several folks video taping the entire procedure…..preferably from several different angles. Always pays to document….so things don’t become a “he said….she said” match later. This would be an excellent for folks that are NOT delegates, but dedicated to the cause.

These are history making events, let’s get them recorded!!

In Louisiana they just simply ignored the will of the people and just gave it to McCain with no vote.

It sure seems like the NEOCON ******** are scared of something to still be pulling this blatant cheating.

Is this telling us all that Ron Paul still has a chance and they are scared? I would say yes!

Just saying one more time if you go to the GOP convention bring cameras to record what happens. They bought extra tasers!

‘Unity’ is an amzing concept…something similar to the Fasces symbol that was used as the basis of Fascism, when Mussolini invested the concept in the 1920s….namely, dissent is not permitted….obedience to authority….and always trust those in higher authority….the same philosophy hat nearly destroyed Europe in two World Wars….”Unity” is over-rated…..In this case it means obedience…this GOP Nomination process is all becoming like a Michael Moore documentary.
Why can’t “debate”, “open discussion”, “intelligence”, “civic responsibility”, “fiscal responsibility” etc… be placed as central concepts ???? Are these concepts not far more important ????
And then there is the US Constitution. The US soldiers does not fight for a Saudi owned company like Carlysle Private Equity, but for his neighbourhood, his state, his country, and above all else the US Constitution.

    Eric,

Why is Louisiana being allowed to get away with giving their primary votes to McCain? Is anything legally being done about that? Shouldn’t all the delegates from Louisiana be unbound to vote for whomever they chose, since Huck got more votes than any of the others?
