Campaign for President of the United States

Underreporting Ron Paul

Several readers have brought to my attention a very interesting National Public Radio interview with Tom Rosenstiel of the Project for Excellence in Journalism. A caller to the program, Andrew, asked Rosenstiel a question about coverage of Ron Paul and the power of the press to decide which candidates are “viable.” This is what Rosenstiel had to say:

It raises obviously one of the fundamental questions: is press coverage a self-fulfilling prophecy? Can a candidate who doesn’t get press coverage win votes, or do you need the exposure, the oxygen of attention? Last week, the week before Super Tuesday, the coverage that ended Feb. 3, Ron Paul was a significant or primary figure in zero percent of the stories that we analyzed, 600 stories across 48 different news outlets.

Andrew is correct in suggesting that the press has discounted the chances of Ron Paul having any success. The fundraising success that he’s having is one of the traditional metrics that journalists use to test viability. If someone is raising money, usually that translates into some attention.

For a variety of reasons, some of them are obvious and some of them are mysterious, Ron Paul gets less coverage than he does raise money, and he gets less coverage than he gets votes. We can go on and on about this. There is no doubt, it’s an objective fact, that the press has decided Ron Paul is not a viable candidate.

You can hear the interview for yourself at NPR’s site. Andrew’s question and Rosenstiel’s response occur about five minutes in.

The media news isn’t all so daunting. We’ve been working hard, particularly with local media, to get Dr. Paul’s name out. Our media presence increased over the last three months: in November, we had 2638 broadcast media mentions of Ron Paul; about 2768 hits in December; and 6291 in January, at the height of the primary season. Our print media exposure also increased from December to January, from 2400 hits to 4425 hits. These hits don’t necessarily cover everything, but they’re reflective of trends.

So, we’re fighting back, but as Rosenstiel’s remarks show, we’re up against national media that have already made up their minds about Ron Paul and have decided not to cover him to the extent that his fundraising and his following merit.

(And ideas should count for something too, right? Unfortunately, as the endless hours of TV coverage dedicated to celebrities, celebrity overdoses, and hearings about steroids in baseball indicate, serious issues like the war in Iraq, the declining dollar and tumbling economy, and the growth of ever more intrusive government are just not on the agenda of many “news” sources.)

He would, more than likely, have said nothing had the caller not asked.

We should never let the media coast by without bothering to confront them. There’s such a thing as righteous indignation and this is what’s called for; a spade’s a spade. Because this man took the time to call in, everyone listening to the program had the opportunity to hear the truth. As I said before, HAD HE NOT ASKED THE QUESTION, NOBODY LISTENING WOULD HEAR THE TRUTH.

Giving extra attention on the March 4 primaries

Can we call local television stations about RON PAUL?

I just met a student from Paris who is rooting for Dr. Paul! It was very encouraging. Our media completely sucks, but people ALL AROUND THE WORLD know what’s at stake. We can’t give up on our man just yet. We (and the rest of the world) need him!

Just to catch the campaign’s attention: I watched the video “Mosh” by Eminem and it strikes a powerful anti-war message. If he believes in his own lyrics, I think that Eminem would be inclined to help out the campaign and could bring a lot of publicity to Ron Paul. Especially if he were to agree to do something to energize supporters, say like a free concert for attendees of the march?

I heard “Ron Paul” a couple times on radio and TV during the VA primary.
They would ask voters who they voted for, and the local news radio actually got an answer for every active candidate on the ballot. I was floored.
Of course, when the “Ron Paul” came as the answer, the interviewer said “WHY????”, as if the interviewee had said something more like “I just shoved my junx in an electric socket”.
His answer was vanilla, the “he represents my views” kind of thing.

My wife got interviewed for the local paper, and she said what I would have said, and what I haven’t heard anyone else say yet: BECAUSE HE APPARENTLY HAS NOT ONLY READ THE CONSTITUTION, BUT INTENDS TO FOLLOW IT.

I like how the supreme law of the land hasn’t even come up as a topic of conversation for any other presidential candidate, or any other voters.

So my question is, what are some creative ways we can generate some attention for Dr. Paul? Yes the web and the viral videos and all that have been a good approach so far, but are there any unique ideas for exposure that nobody’s tried before? I just think there has to be some way to get some positive media attention, even if they’ve already written RP off. Maybe Ron Paul supporters should organize do some newsworthy charitable work…I know marches and gatherings are great but what if we used that energy for something that is both beneficial to the campaign and other people. I don’t know if that’s a worthy idea or not but just looking to get a brainstorming session going here.

People going to vote who are not intimately connected to the process and actively researching simply CANNOT know Ron Paul’s name or that he even exists before they might happen to glance over it on the ballot due to this bias. No one is going to vote for a name they have never seen or heard of.

The week BEFORE Super Tuesday was the worst. This is the MOST important week and RP gets 0%. Not sure if this will come out, but here is the table:

    Main Newsmaker
    Significant Presence
    Total Percent of Campaign Stories

Main Newsmaker Significant Presence Total Percent of Campaign Stories
    John McCain 25.00% 12.40% 37.40%
    Barack Obama (D) 26.6 7.4 34
    Hillary Clinton (D) 22.1 9.9 32
    Mitt Romney (R) 11.1 10.2 21.3
    Rudy Giulaini (R) 7.9 6.2 14.1
    John Edwards (D) 5.5 1.7 7.2
    Bill Clinton 2 4 6
    Mike Huckabee (R) 1 1 2
    Bill Richardson (D) 0 0.2 0.2
    Ron Paul (R) 0 0 0
Total Number of Campaign Stories = 597

This is why people MUST make phone calls and get friends/family members to go to the polls and vote to make some more noise so that the message of Freedom gets out.

Most conservatives don’t like McCain, so the will either sit it out b/c they see it as an unwinnable horse race or cave in and vote for him for unwarranted fear of the greater evil of Hillary or Obama. Don’t buy into this nonsense b/c we’ll get the same thing with McCin or Obama/Hillary.

Look up “Wrong Paul” on Newsweek.com for some real bias. They admit that A) Ron Paul has been raising front-runner type money, B) Ron Paul has been attracting front-runner type volunteer numbers, C) Ron Paul is the most searched for candidate on their website, and D) they haven’t covered him, except for a few mentions in post-debate stories (i.e., they are not serving their own readers). They say they didn’t cover him because they didn’t expect him to have a chance at the nomination, yet they covered other candidates with less support and less successful campaigns.

Then they go on to claim that Ron Paul said the NAFTA Superhighway and the NAU were part of a secret conspiracy, a question he directly countered in one of the debates! They also try to insinuate that his past endorsements by and of Ronald Reagan are questionable, because he once said Reagan didn’t deliver on his pro-liberty platform in office.

While it’s important to note that the number of actual media mentions has increased, it seems more relevant to compare those totals with the number of mentions of each of the candidates. It’s only natural that presidential candidates will be discussed more as primaries near. Also of value would be a comparison of the duration of each segment devoted to each candidate.
Of course if while Dr. Paul is being discussed, there is snickering, condescending tone of voice, and eye-rolling accompanying his name, those mentions overwhelmingly negate the positive ones.
It is certainly nice to hear an objective voice from the world of journalism ethics confirm the truth we have known all along. Thank you for posting this article–now I have concrete evidence to show the people who look at me like I am nuts when I try to convince them that the media is biased and corrupt.

How Can Ron Paul Be “Successful” Unless He’s Attacked?
    (Apollonian, 13 Feb 08)

Establishment News Media is mere creature of counterfeiting Federal Reserve Bank (Fed–see RealityZone.com for expo/ref.) “financing,” obviously. Ron Paul is now “old news,” quite as much buried as it’s possible for such est. media.

Prospects for Ron Paul depend upon media OTHER than establishment. And it’s no coincidence “ratings” for establishment media have been going steadily downwards, stock lies getting old and tiresome.

Observe then counterfeiting is fraud by definition, hence conspiracy by definition. If u don’t have courage to face and speak truth, u’re sunk, and u may as well give-up now.

And note Christian New Testament (NT) is and contains distinct “conspiracy theory” (Pharisees, scribes, and Sadducees). So anyone ridiculing conspiracy ridicules NT and Christianity.

Ron Paul then should understand as Christian he has excellent reference which cannot help but to gain sympathy and support with millions. Christians are THE people of USA among all others who are beholden thereto–don’t forget.

Thus Ron Paul only needs understand he shouldn’t “*****-foot” about by means of a disconnected intellectuality; he must also be explicit, sharp, and CONCRETE. There are active enemies of USA–and they’re not “Islamo-fascists.”

Thus Ron Paul should (again) emphasize he’s for “America First–NOT Israel or the UN.” Note American people are fair enough to know accusation of “anti-semitism” is just stock BULLYING tactic of professional hysterics. And note further Christian NT is itself anti-semitic (anti-Talmud) as Gosp. MARK 7:1-8.

So u people who pretend to be for “freedom” need to understand freedom depends upon rule-of-law, hence TRUTH, which itself is only possible in OBJECTIVE (Aristotelian) reality, which objectivity u must have confidence in. Hence u must not fear attempted ridicule by professional liars and hysterics.

Hence u must attack (U HAVE NO CHOICE), and this means u must attack (a) conspiracy, and (b) treason and selling out to a foreign nation, Israel. THE VERY OBJECT IS TO GET THESE ENEMIES TO ATTACK U, hence attacking Ron Paul. Get a clue.

Ron Paul cannot consider himself successful unless he’s more intensively attacked by these active enemies of USA, topmost conspirators behind Fed counterfeit fraud, and their close cousins, Israel and the aliens (and enemies) who support Israel. And if anyone doubts Israel is gross enemy of USA, just refer him/her to UssLiberty.org.

CONCLUSION: It’s now very much matter of who’s-kidding-who? And Ron Paul needs to realize HE’S GOT NOTHING TO LOSE regarding professional liars of establishment who are complicit w. the vote-riggers behind the Manchurian candidate, et al. Honest elections and death to the Fed. Apollonian

I have to disagree with Rosentiel on one salient point: it isn’t that mainstream media has decided that Ron Paul is not viable, it’s that mainstream media has decided they don’t WANT Ron Paul to be viable and are doing everything they can to ensure he does not get the coverage he deserves and has earned. This is purely a case of the tail wagging the dog.

I propose that we hold MSM’s feet to the fire and toast ‘em a bit. They are clearly failing in their duty to act in the public interest - how about we call them on that; make ‘em answer for their fraudulent behavior? Let’s sue ‘em… but not in a big class action suit: they can bring big guns to bear on a single suit and tied it up for years, meanwhile the election goes past and no coverage.

Rather, what I think may be particularly effective and - incidentally - harder for MSM to counter, would be a whole rash of small lawsuits, all across the country. Wherever we have a meetup group large enough to support tort action, we should file. Then, when Faux, CNN, MSNBC and the rest have more lawsuits than lawyers, we will have a chance to really get some justice.

I don’t know how to structure this because (as is probably quite obvious) I’m not a lawyer. But are bound to be one or two really good tort lawyers in our group that can sort this out.

Let’s give mainstream media a bloody nose and take back our government at the same time. What do you say?

Just a few minutes ago I was watching Wisconsin news (we are close to the border). That little line that runs along the bottom of the screen was listing Presidential candidates scheduled events for Wisconsin. At the end of the lineup was “Ron Paul (I was thrilled to see his name) no events scheduled”. NO EVENTS SCHEDULED. They finally have something about Ron Paul on TV and they are announcing nothing!

It is like everything that u know in your heart and have read is true and I don’t feel crazy anymore. infact i feel quite normal again but at the same time i am so disgusted. it sucks for the people who just dont get it. can u be mad at them for being tricked???? personally i am ready to fight this until the day i die for my son and my husband (who was supposedly fighting for freedom). What Tom Rosensteil so disingeniously omits to mention is the fact that his very own Project on Excellence(sic) in Journalism has been AIDING AND ABETTING the media coverup of Dr Paul’s campaign. I initiated a project, and have been running a thread about “Project to Expose the MSM blackout of Dr Paul” http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=100886 . In it, we see that the author of the PEJ repors has not even been covering the fact of Dr Paul’s non-coverage. He has excluded Dr Paul from the graphs, and even during the week that Rosenstiel mentions, in the lead up to Super Tuesday (the same week in which Q4 donation figures were released) dropped Dr Paul off the data table!!

I have been producing weekly threads on their reports, the latest of which is for the week of Feb 4 to Feb 10 and is at http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=118717
Their coverage of Dr Paul has improved. This week - the first time in the FIVE reports they have done so far - they actually wrote ONE SENTENCE on Dr Paul. PEJ - or at least the author of the reports - has an agenda.

I had no luck, initially, with my own efforts, so I have been encouraging grassroots to contact Tom Rosenstiel, and prod them to cover Dr Paul more. Maybe his comments here are a reflection of that.

Check out my links, above. Very interesting stuff.

BTW, I sent Jesse Benton an email about this a few weeks ago, telling him to issue a press release about the fact that the report showed Dr Paul only had 0.2% of coverage. I had no acknowledgement, and he has ignored my recommendations. MSM needs to be embarassed/shamed into giving fair coverage.

It’s a two-pronged problem. As a former newspaper publisher, I can assure you that the media do in fact hate Ron Paul… I’ve documented some of that in my nearly-completed book on this Revolution.

Which brings me to the second prong: this campaign has done a weak job of promoting its candidate. I discovered this personally when I was unable to get any replies to the most basic queries. This won’t be a huge problem for me; I’m able to finish a manuscript without direct responses from the campaign.

However, it signifies a BIG problem for the publicity arm of the RP revolution when they won’t even respond to a simple request from a writer who is investing the time and energy to compile a book on their presidential candidate. I can just imagine how they aren’t responding to newspaper reporters, radio inquiries, and so on. It’s really a pity; Ron Paul could have had a lot better exposure.

    Latest News at RPR….

What Does $300,000 Buy? (Hint: Way more than you think…)

“What?!? $300,000 for a dumb logo on the side of a car?”

Actually, the real estate on the side of the car may be the least important thing in the entire sponsorship package. It’s almost a bonus. (And it will be seen every time they change the right rear tire during a pit stop.)

So what does $300, 000 actually buy?

Nearly 40 weeks of TV exposure for 4+ hours a week, every week, from now through the Election. No matter what else happens in the campaign.

    * Access to the national and local media via the sports desk–not the news desk–every week from this weekend, through the summer, through the Convention, and up until Election Day. Coverage valued at millions of dollars.
    * An average TV audience of TWO MILLION people for each race will hear mentions of Ron Paul’s sponsorship of two different vehicles. (This totals 75 MILLION viewers per season).
    * Access to the NASCAR fan base: conservative-leaning, patriotic, supportive of gun rights, supportive of border security, and supportive of the military. They are IDEAL candidates to become Ron Paul voters.
    * Driver of the No. 22 Supercuts Dodge will be Mike Bliss, and the driver of the No.36 Shark Energy Dodge will be Kenny Wallace. Ron Paul Racing is allowed to use the name and likeness of the drivers and car owner in TV, radio, print, and on the Internet.
    * When Kenny Wallace or Mike Bliss wins a race, they will mention Ron Paul in media interviews in Victory Lane.
    * Kenny Wallace is a popular presenter on two weekly NASCAR shows on Speed TV and has a lot of opportunities to drop names. He is also personally supportive of Ron Paul’s candidacy and message. He’s not just being paid to hawk Ron Paul…he’s one of us.
    * Kenny Wallace has a huge and very supportive fan base. This gives us access to fans who want to know everything there is to know about their favorite driver and the things that he supports. We also have access to Mike Bliss and his fan base.
    * Ron Paul Racing will have use of the team’s “Show Cars,” which are identical to the real race cars, and can make personal appearances at Ron Paul events (like the March on Washington?) The Show Car will be traveling through Texas on March 4 and can be available for Texas Primary promotional events.
    * Logo will also be in associate positions on both of the transporters and on all pit equipment. The Transporter is a huge 18-wheeler with a billboard on each side. The transport vehicles travel over 100,000 miles during each racing season, exposing that many more people to Ron Paul and his message.
    * Fitz Motorsports will provide Ron Paul Racing with traditional, at-track, team media relations services. Fitz Motorsports has access to the media that Ron Paul does not currently have.
    * We believe this is the first time a presidential candidate has sponsored a NASCAR team. This is historic and may gain media coverage.
    * This will be one of the few (if any) times that thousands of grassroots supporters have sponsored a team. This is historic and may gain media coverage.
    * “Alternative media” possibilities are endless. How about a Ron Paul Video Blog from every race weekend? How about podcasting from the track? How about Meetup rallies and sign waves at EVERY track for 35 races? How about the Ron Paul Show Car at a campaign rally? How about Ron Paul and NASCAR Meetup groups hooking up?

And even if (god forbid) Ron Paul is not the nominee, the Ron Paul NASCAR sponsorship can still help him retain his congressional seat.

So why haven’t you donated yet?

    Greetings all,
Correct me if I’m wrong (You know I’m not)
The day before yesterday MSNBC reported that the Federal Deficit is twice as large this year than last year.
A couple days before that the Pentagon reports that the US can’t respond militarily if some disaster or attack were to happen on our shores. They claimed the military is stretched too thin.
A govt study also showed that if we were to pull out of Iraq our economy would be a lot better.

Now I ask, Why aren’t these stories on the front page anymore? Why do I have to hunt for them?
It seems the media is very particular with the stories it runs. Hide the dirt, Hide the truth.
In Ron Paul’s case it’s hide the truth, hide the answer.
This is unacceptable. I was under the impression that all candidates were to be given an even amount of time by the media. The media was to be unbiased.
The so called Fourth Estate needs to have a tax levied on it. One they will not forget.
Write, call, fax, email, post billboards and the like.
It’s time to show the media that we are dissatisfied with them.
One voice can go unnoticed, ten can go unheard, One Million cannot be ignored.
It’s time to rise up and make your voices heard!!
I’m MAD AS HELL, and I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!

What plans are being made to have slim jims available to all race fans at every race? Does the car marking include a BIG easily readable reference to ronpaul2008.com especially for those watching on TV. Has the news camaera men been recruoited to make sure many close up shots are made of the car? I know that many racing facing at the race itself use binoculars. Will our sponsor in any interviews mention his support for On Paul?
